Citizens Network (CEE CN). 8 country cases hint at a

at the local level across Europe. Members of the network
and other European partners have long called for a more
systematic mapping of local participation in Europe, in
order to build intellectual and experiential resources
for network members, local activists and interested

TV: Making a Week's Worth of Rain Last the Whole Year
In this episode, we discussed how
AquaPro's Groasis is working to improve reforestation
efforts in arid climates by utilizing nature's simplest
and most effective examples. The Groasis uses incubation
to deliver water over a time-period in tune with a
seedling's demand for water. Any precipitation from
rainfall or evening condensation is collected from the
fan-shaped roof of the device and stored in
evaporation-proof containers (Worldwatch).

Sustainable Development has appointed ECO-UNESCO as
consultants for the development of a National Strategy
on Education for Sustainable Development. This is an
important commitment from the Irish Government on the

Ireland.

Environment: According to the 2011 Princeton Review, 69
percent of college applicants say that having
information about a college's commitment to
environmental issues would contribute to their decision
to apply to or attend the school. This is up from 64
percent in 2008 and reflects a growing trend in higher
education across North America. As awareness of the
importance of protecting our planet's resources grows,
many colleges and universities are seeking to establish
or promote their school's environmentally-friendly

languages to empower youth to take a stand in the
climate debate. The Nordic countries reach out to the
younger generations to solve tomorrow’s challenges.

New web: An RCE is a network of existing formal,
non-formal and informal education organisations,
mobilised to deliver education for sustainable
development (ESD) to local and regional communities. A
network of RCEs worldwide will constitute the Global
Learning Space for Sustainable Development. RCEs aspire
to achieve the goals of the UN Decade of Education for
Sustainable Development (DESD, 2005-2014), by
translating its global objectives into the context of
the local communities in which they operate.

The Climate Caravan is coming
Youth on the move: 160 young people in Norway and
Africa, of whom nearly half are from the organizations
KFUK-KFUM have started mobilizing for a new, equitable
and binding climate agreement. Theyt recently
participated in a big concert in Nairobi and then headed
south through six African countries on their way to the
climate summit in Durban.

Agriculture and Nutrition
Innovation:
This week we looked at how open
source software, or software that is available for free
to the public, is helping organizations reach small
farmers and rural communities. Organizations can use
this software not only to get in touch with people in
places without Internet access but also to take surveys,
hold competitions, coordinate with other staff members,
and run campaigns (Worldwatch).

competition for a new Energy Plant in Bergen
A competition has
been announced for students at the three Norwegian
schools of architecture for design of an attractive and
efficient energy producing plant using heat pumps,
renewable energy etc., at the former industrial site of

Education: Building a Sustainable
School and Teaching the World's Future
Dan Schitzer,
the Director of Sustainability and Operations at the
Academy for Global Leadership (AGC), discussed how this
Chicago Public Charter School is engaging the local
community and empowering its students. In addition to
regular classes, students at AGC receive environmental
education, wellness instruction, and lessons in organic
gardening, which allows them to interact with their
environment and learn about the entire process of
growing food (Worldwatch).

”O-Fagspatruljen” (O-class patrol) is an internet site
for all who remember how Orientation, usually called
O-class, was the coolest subject at school. And for
those too young to have experienced it, since it is no
longer on the curriculum, but who can see they would
have enjoyed it. The class was about nature studies and
social topics including history and geography

kicks-off in San Francisco
Eat and talk (Video):
Ellen Gustafson and her colleagues brought together food
advocates from a variety of organizations, including
California Food Policy Advocates (CFPA), CoFed, and the
Jamie Oliver Foundation, to eat and talk about the best
ways to change the global food system. This is the first
of 30 dinners that Gustafson will host in 30 states,
where she plans to bring policy makers and other
important stakeholders to the table to discuss the

Education: In South Africa, the
School's Environmental Education and Development (SEED)
organization has established an Organic Classroom
Programme to improve food security in the Cape Flats
region. Through the use of permaculture - a holistic
agriculture system that mimics relationships found in
nature, SEED's program is engaging students in
environmental sustainability and better food production

Science: President-elect of the
International Society for Ecological Economics (ISEE),
Dr. Bina Agarwal, has issued a call for papers to be
presented at the12th Biennial Conference of ISEE in
2012. ISEE is a nonprofit organization "dedicated to
advancing understanding of the relationships between the
economy, ecology and society, for the mutual well-being
of people and nature." The themes of the conferences,
based on the Rio+20 summit, will be greening the
economy, the political economy of green development,
environmental justice and methodological challenges

Workshop: The second of three
workshops on sustainable mobility held in Szentendre
(Hungary) will give participants the opportunity to
network with researchers and policy-makers from all over
Europe, including the EU Commission. The workshop takes
place from 6-7 October 2011 and is run by CORPUS, a
project that aims to translate scientific evidence and
research into effective environmental policy-making. The
workshop will also focus on practical assistance for
drafting sustainable consumption policies (CORPUS).

Conference: 700
delegates from all over the world joined the 8th World
Assembly arranged by the International Council for Adult
Learning (ICAE).
One of four main themes addressed the importance of
education for sustainable development. The city of Malmö
hosted the conference. The welcoming by Mayor Ilmar
Reepalu and other presentations of the sustainable city
development was one of many concrete and inspiring

Denmark is an open network of researchers,
administrators, NGO’s, educators and others whose goal
is to develop and implement Education for Sustainable
Development in Denmark, as a key activity within the UN
Decade for Education for Sustainable Development
(2005-14). RCE stands for Regional Center of Expertise;
the network is now formally recognized by the United
Nations University.
All
organizations and institutions involved in the Decade
are welcome to apply for membership as partners. The
intention is that the network should grow and create
cooperation across all sectors of education and public
outreach in Denmark.
